Google has extended its advanced AI chatbot, Gemini, to older Android devices. Despite official documentation stating a requirement for Android 12 or newer, users with devices running Android 10 and 11 can now enjoy Gemini’s intelligent assistance, which serves as an alternative to Google Assistant.
In Short
- Google has expanded compatibility for its AI chatbot Gemini
- Older Android devices running Android 10 and 11 can now download Gemini AI
- Once installed, Google Gemini will replace Google Assistant as the main AI assistant
Google has quietly expanded compatibility for its advanced AI chatbot, Gemini, making it accessible on a wider range of devices. Initially launched earlier this year exclusively for Android 12 and newer, Google has recently expanded support for its AI assistant to older Android devices. Users with devices running Android 10 and 11 can now install and enjoy the AI chatbot via the latest app updates.
The latest version of the Gemini app for Android, v1.0.626720042, now supports devices running Android 10 and 11, lowering the minimum system requirements from Android 12. Users with older Android versions can now download Gemini through the Google Play Store and enjoy the app without relying on the web version.
This recent expansion was initially noted by Sumanta Das on Twitter (now known as X) and later highlighted by Artem Russakovskii of Android Police. The update seems to have been released quietly, without a major announcement from Google. Many users who have updated their Google app and Play Services on older Android devices can now download the Gemini app and use its features, which were previously limited to newer models.
Despite this significant expansion, it is noteworthy that Google’s official support page for the Gemini app still indicates a requirement for Android 12 or newer. Nonetheless, the updated Play Store listing allows older Android users to experience Gemini without any issues. Users can now enjoy the AI chatbot, which serves as an alternative to the existing Google Assistant, bringing the same intelligent assistance to their devices.
How to replace Google Assistant with Gemini
- Check your phone’s software version: Go to Settings > About Phone or System > About Device.
- Download Gemini: Open the Google Play Store app on your phone. Search for “Gemini” and download the app.
- Set Gemini as your default assistant:
- Open the Google app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the top right corner.
- Select “Settings” and then “Google Assistant.”
- Look for “Digital assistants from Google.”
- Choose “Gemini” from the available options.
Once installed, Google Gemini will replace Google Assistant as the main AI assistant on supported devices. You can use the Gemini AI assistant for:
- Creating or modifying alarms and timers
- Making phone calls, sending messages, and reading incoming messages
- Controlling your device, like turning on your flashlight or bluetooth, or opening an app
- Controlling your lights, home security, and other smart home devices
- Broadcasting messages on connected devices in your home
- Reading a web page out loud (Pixel 8 or later)
- Getting help with your Pixel by saying “Help me with my Pixel” (Pixel 8 or later)
- Setting reminders and creating calendar events
However, Gemini still uses some aspects of Google Assistant to handle specific commands, ensuring a seamless transition for users accustomed to the older AI assistant. If you ever want to switch back to Google Assistant, you can follow the same steps and choose “Google Assistant” instead
